Five Local
Winners of Video Excellence Awards
The Midpeninsula Community Media Center (the ÒMedia
CenterÓ), is proud to announce that five locally produced programs were chosen
winners in this yearÕs Western Alliance Video
Excellence, (WAVE) Awards. The awards were held Saturday,
October 30, in Reno, Nevada. Their purpose is to recognize and promote the best
in local community programming produced in the Western region of the Alliance
for Community Media (ACM). The Western region includes Arizona, California,
Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico.
Of the five winners, three were community producers,
and two were in the Professional category. ÒMy Mountain,Ó produced by Stanford Freshman Marie Jo
Mont-Reynaud won the Programming
by Youth category with her
enlightening documentary about life in impoverished, rural Haiti. Ò4-Directions, Ò a unique and original news and public issues show,
produced by local artist Jennifer Benorden and friends won the Community News category with a special look into the prison industry. Vicci
Smith, producer of She-TVÓ
took first place in the Talk
Show Entertainment category with her
program ÒExploring Belly DanceÓ.
In the Professional category the local UN Association
took first place in the Public Service Announcement/Promo category
with their promo Ò2004 UNA Film Festival
Trailer,Ó and the Performing
Arts category was won by ÒShakespeare:
The Remix, Òa video adaptation
of the TheatreWorksÕ stage production of the same name. This teleplay was
a collaborative effort between the Media Center and TheatreWorks.
Also recognized as finalists during the award ceremony
were: - ÒNEWSwatch: Erosion of Reproductive RightsÓ - (Talk
Show Issues category), produced by
the Media Center; ÒOther Voices-Special Edition: The Draft DebateÓ- (Pubic Forum category), a televised community forum co-produced by the Media Center
and the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center; ÒTalking with HenriettaÓ, featuring a discussion on reforming our prisons
produced and hosted by Henrietta Burroughs, (Talk Show Issues
category); and ÓThis is My Job, Ò (Programs by
Youth category), featuring 7 year
old Caddie King interviewing a
variety of professionals about their jobs . ÒShakespeare:
The RemixÓ also received a
finalist nomination in the Entertainment category.
The Midpeninsula Community Media Center (the ÒMedia CenterÓ), operates local
cable channels 27, 28 & 30, and provides public access to cable TV for
residents in Atherton, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Stanford.
Production training is offered along with accessible studio facilities,
